My Darling Caroline Adele Ashworth 9780515123692 Books Reviews

I have read many historical romances but this one stands out among the list. It was so well written that it will blow you away. Lady Caroline is a very intelligent woman who would love to be able to study botany at Oxford. In this time period, women were not permitted to get an education, so all her efforts of trying to keep learning were being met with obstacles along the way. She is the middle of 4 sisters and she has a genius IQ for numbers. She was thought to be strange among her peers, so she grew up to be lonely and would spend time among her flowers in the garden. Then she makes a discovery that no man has ever made before. She learns to cross breed plants to create new colors of roses. She has no wish to be married. However, her father and youngest sister concoct a plot to marry her off to a man, who, after returning from war and losing his property to her father, has no interest in anything other then reacquiring his property.

Lord Brent is a troubled man who never believed that love existed because his mother resented all men and took it out on him. Her( the mother's) brother became a famous botanist and she hated that her parents treated him differently then her. Brent grew up with his sister Charlotte, lonely and spending time with his horses. What happens through this arranged marriage becomes a discovery for both Brent and Caroline. They both have deep seated insecurities and try to hold onto their pride. They have many misunderstandings that will sadden and frustrate the reader at times as all we can wish is to see them get through it.

Without giving out anymore of the story, there will be things from his past that will create tension in this story. Both have secrets that are kept by both of them that will come to be revealed. The beauty in being female will all be revealed at the end of the story. It left me emotional with its powerful ending.
Winter Garden was nearly perfect to me, so I really didn't think this author could disappoint me - and I was so right. She didn't. My Darling Caroline was another wonderful read. It was a perfectly delightful story of two people thrown together against their wishes establishing a relationship and falling in love along the way. For me, it was a treat.

What scares me is that I nearly didn't order this book because of the negative reviews. While well written, I beg to disagree with everything they objected to. There was nothing - absolutely nothing - `creepy' about this book. I thought it was dreamy!

The daughter didn't live in filth - she was simply allowed to run wild, ungroomed and misunderstood. Why should the author devote excessive attention to a minor character? Yes, of course, she remedied the immediate problem without dragging the storyline down. If I wanted to read about working with deafness, I would have re-read Helen Keller's biography.

This wasn't meant to be a spy story - there are plenty in another genre. As for coincidences - well if one objects to them, why bother to read fiction at all??? The ending dispels most of them at any rate.

I personally love secondary characters that walk on and off after playing their parts. To me, that indicates that the author recognizes my intelligence enough to trust me to figure things out for myself. I hate getting a lot of introductory background info thrown at me, taking my focus from my main interest. Did I care about servants, her sisters, his sister - or even his daughter? Not really, excepting only as they propelled the story forward. I wanted to concentrate on Brent and Caroline. Ashworth is masterful at keeping focused.

So, if you like good writing, great characterizations, and enjoy the sensuality of a slow building relationship involving a marriage of convenience, then you will definitely enjoy this book. I found the whole premise pleasurable. I love a former spy for a hero. Brent is clever, resourceful, strong, reticent, handsome, talented and scarred emotionally. Caroline is an unusual heroine, but I loved her traits - and most especially her tart responses! I found the slow reveal of their relationship to be perfectly paced and actually believable. I loved that the enemy pursuit was so in the background tantalizing me with just enough suspense, but not enough to make me squirm.

Halfway through, the book picks up pace and that's when I really began to love this story. Page after page of simply delightful twists and turns. Maybe I liked it so much because it didn't follow a formula that I could recognize or feel like I knew what was coming next. Basically, I loved watching two people thrown together forge a love story, however reluctant they were to admit it. And, best of all, it wasn't a constant friction of `I hate you' or spiteful fights. And, did I mention that Ashworth pens the most intimate love scenes I've ever had the pleasure to read. Ahhh....
