Lots of great reviews already for this lovely book. There is humor, a bit of intrigue, and a great cast of characters, to include an h who does not get a great start in life, but under the tutelage of her redoubtable aunt, she blossoms, and when she meets the H, he falls deeply for her before he even knows who she is.

I thoroughly enjoyed this and recommend it for your own reading pleasure!

Three Lords for Lady Anne Signet Regency Romance Charlotte Louise Dolan 9780451170644 Books Reviews

Well, this was fun, well-told and well-written.

Gist a noblewoman sick of her social-climbing Cit relatives who've taken her and her mother in for their own advantage has struck out on her own and become a much-in-demand governess. She's hired to bring twin hellions into line before they're packed off to Harrow by their guardian in absentia, a baron who was a captain in the navy. His wards, a young marquis and his twin brother, raise rumpuses in the isolation of their Devon home but it's time to civilize them. The good, but absent captain suspects there is a whiff of the unsavory about the governess hired to do so. He sets out for Devon to discover if his worst suspicions are true.

Anne, the governess, has just the knack needed to handle the boys, challenging them with unorthodox lessons in survival, natural history and scientific observation. She also develops a strong antipathy for the feckless, no-show guardian who has left them to their lonely childhood.

The captain has yet to meet the governess, but he regards her with distaste, assuming she is a light-skirt hired by his useless fribble of a cousin(?). This dandy has been hiring and firing staff in his absence with his tacit permission. He has also been gambling and spending money so freely, the captain has hired runners to determine if he's embezzling income from the young marquis' estates.

So H/h are on a collision course, have formed less than flattering opinions of each other and are supremely well equipped to raze the other to the ground.

By chance, the very tall governess lays eyes on a very, very tall man and is smacked upside the head by love at first sight. Ditto him. This bit clanged compared everything else that was wonderful here.

The three lords of the title are the two young boys who charm and challenge her and the third, big lord she can't seem to ignore.

There are several baddies stirring up trouble to add to the plot. The beginning was delightful, the rest fine but not up to the great start for me. If I remember correctly this author also wrote Fallen Angel, which was a delight. Overall impression, I enjoyed reading this, but I won't be re-reading it so it's not 5 stars for me. I will be reading more of her books now that they're available as ebooks. She's a wonderful storyteller, and her characters are full-bodied, admirable and articulate.
I wish Charlotte Louise Dolan had written more books. Each one I have read has surprised and delighted me. Her stories and characters are fresh and original. My heart is engaged as well as my head. I like these people. Sometimes it seems that the plot and villains remind me of the old screwball comedies of the 1930's and 40's. Sometimes they remind me of theatrical farces. But they are always entertaining. The twins in this story are complete hellions but adorable. They are "ingenious" as they like to remind their elders but they fall in love with their governess, Lady Anne, as does their guardian, when he come to know her. They are her three Lords.

This is a wonderful escapist story that kept me turning pages all afternoon. I recommend this novel and this author. Completely entertaining. The author throws in the suspense of a villain who is dangerous because of his incompetence. He may inadvertently harm the twins because he wants to avoid physical violence to get control of their fortune. But he is so inept, he may kill someone without meaning to! Why is he so desperate? I won't spoil it by revealing the answer. I was torn between laughing at him and feeling sorry for the fate that awaits him if he can't pay his debts.
The storytelling was so perfect. Four days later and I can still remember the names of the Hero (Bronson) and the heroine (Anne.) That's how much I liked this. (Sometimes I forget names while I'm still reading a book)

Anne is VERY tall, VERY self-possessed, VERY intelligent, with loads of gumption. Bronson is even TALLER and has some sense. He waltzed into the tale with a slew of misconceptions about Anne. Written by a lesser author, those would have turned into one Big Misunderstanding after another, but not here. He checks them out and quickly gets to the truth of the matter. How many times do we silently beg an author to have her characters do just that?

I enjoyed this from start to finish. I liked the opening vignette about village societal doings. The young lords kept me laughing, and I laughed even harder at how Anne easily corralled them. Bronson was no slouch either. Great H and h. Great tertiary characters. Even the villain was such a stumblebum I didn't work up any angst over him. His machinations just added to the interest.

I read complaints tha Bronson and Anne didn't meet until well into the story. I didn't even notice that, there was so much entertainment in the story I was glued.

Wonderful writing. Brilliant characters. Really fun story. I can't imagine anyone not enjoying this one.

Now I have another to rank with my all-time favorite Dolan novel, Fallen Angel.

Enjoy your reading! )
