Skies of Jeremiah eBook John LaRue

I really enjoyed this one! It was very good science fiction! I think Mr. LaRue was channeling (or perhaps paying tribute to) Robert Heinlein. The story is told in first person from the viewpoints of the captain of the ship that discovered a planet with alien life on it and the female governor who comes with colonists a few years after the initial ship arrived. This thoughtfully written story flowed well with just enough science to make it good SF, a hint of crustiness, and just the right touch of humor. The captain and the governor don't always see eye-to-eye, but the reader sympathizes with both viewpoints. I deducted a star for excessive and unnecessary vulgarity. He even breaks the Fourth of the Ten Commandments repeatedly and to the point where I was uncomfortable. Nevertheless, I strongly recommended this book.

Skies of Jeremiah eBook John LaRue Reviews

It's a privilege to enter this sci-fi universe with new author John La Rue. Great idea, interesting narrative structure, and depth of character development. Richly conceived and simply executed. When you finish, which you will undoubtedly do in one page-turning binge, you will surely join me in asking him, when does the next one come out? I just want to go back to Jeremiah.
Reminiscent of scifi stories from the 50s, but doesn't get too hung up on the technology, but rather concentrates on the moral dilemmas that make for a great story.
"Skies of Jeremiah" nails it with a cast of convincing characters that each somehow manages to have their own voice without seeming at all contrived. It's a great feeling to be cheering simultaneously for the competing agendas of the characters. Engrossing story with a fantastic style. I will definitely be tracking down more from this author.
Bleh.
Must-read for sci-fi fans who ever picked up Asimov, Bradbury, or anyone else in the tradition. LaRue offers an ingenious conceit supported by strong character development and excellent prose that defies the conventional weaknesses of the genre. Backed by actual scientific accuracy, but unbounded by imagination, LaRue takes his characters on an amazing journey to Jeremiah and the world in which humans dare to colonize. Gordon is awesome and it’s great to see an author employ a bad-ass female leader. Please write another one!
The fast-paced plot hooked me in, surprising twists at every juncture kept me turning pages at breakneck speed, and characters’ witty banter kept me laughing throughout. All for the price of a fancy coffee! And well worth it. I’d recommend this book to anyone looking for a fresh science fiction read. Be warned, though — just like coffee, it will leave you hooked and wanting more!
A unique and highly readable take on a classic SF plot- human colonists arrive on a new world and find more than they expected.

LaRue gives his characters and their world a pleasing complexity and history, but he doesn't weigh down the plot with backstory or exposition. That's a tricky balance. The result is a world that is detailed enough to feel utterly real, but still leaves the reader wanting to know more.
