It's 1971 and the Vietnam war rages. When Michael Dibiaso returns from Vietnam, the Army assigns him to a special unit that acts as honor guard and pallbearers for soldiers killed in Vietnam. These experiences turn Michael into a bitter opponent of the war, and after his discharge he continues attending the funerals of fallen soldiers.
Michael’s family had been involved with the Chicago Mafia for years, and his older brother Sergio works with the Mafia in their Stardust Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas.
Sergio becomes embroiled in a fatal dispute with a member of the New York Mafia and Michael gets involved. The brothers decide to get revenge by stealing the year-end skim from the Desert Inn – seven million dollars.

PALLBEARERS AND GAMBLERS A NOVEL edition by MICHAEL JOHN CRUIT Literature Fiction eBooks

As an ex-Para, I appreciated this book; nor was I surprised to see from the author bio that Cruit is also ex-Army.

This book has an authenticity to it not generally found in books pertaining to military service written by those who haven’t served, even those who have done good research and don’t make glaring technical errors.

The vast majority of this book concentrates on the time after the protagonist gets out, but it is said “once a soldier, always a soldier”, and there are definitely many things that stick. Once of those things that stick is a changed perspective on society, people in general, how people behave, the banality of existence and the fragility of life. Also: the ability to deal with a lot of things that most people can’t, while potentially struggling with others; many things seem small and petty in comparison to things that have gone before, while others seem now of enlarged importance. Cruit gives time to all of this and more, and without succumbing to self-aggrandizement, despite the apparent author-insert (I suspect that Michael Cruit and Michael Dibiaso may share more than just their first name and ex-serviceman status).

Some may read this for the (admittedly first-rate) crime story of Dibiaso’s forays back into civvy street, but for me, that was just the backdrop to the exploration of humanity and society, life and loss.

PALLBEARERS AND GAMBLERS A NOVEL edition by MICHAEL JOHN CRUIT Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

“Pallbearers and Gamblers A Novel” by Michael John Cruit is an engaging read, even if it is a rather dark and sad one at times. The story starts out with the main character, Michael Dibiaso, working for a special kind of “honor guard” that serves as pallbearers (hence the book’s title) for fallen Vietnam soldiers. Dibiaso himself served in Vietnam and was fortunate enough to survive and return, but he is angered and becomes a critic of the war machine as he fulfills his duties and has to see the human fallout from this senseless war play out again and again before his eyes.

As the story progresses, you learn that Michael’s family is heavily involved in the Chicago Mafia, with his older brother even working in one of the Mafia’s casinos. The real drama and suspense in the novel comes in when that brother has a deadly falling out with one of the Mafia members and the two brothers end up working together to seek revenge and compensation. This is definitely an exciting, fairly fast-paced read that will keep you guessing!
The novel focuses on Michael Dibiaso, a soldier who was in Vietnam and now works as a member of a unit which attends funerals of fallen soldiers and acts as pallbearers. He has a brother Sergio, who works for mafia in Las Vegas. The author combines those two themes very well. We see how the war affected Michael, his life, relationship and psyche, and how he seeks escape through drugs. Also, he gets involved in plans with his brother to steal money from the mob.
It is an interesting combination, usually I see only war veteran stories or only mafia stories and that's it. The book can be heavy at times, there are descriptions of drug abuse, suffering that Michael endures, dealing with tough emotional issues and I can't say that that is some lighthearted fun. But, there are also dynamic and exciting parts that are real page turners so everything is well balanced. Two brothers are good characters, especially Michael, and it is easy to get involved and care about them. It is not a perfect book, the writing is sometimes a bit clunky and unpolished, but I can recommend it with no hesitation.
As part of the Honor Guard, Michael Dibiaso, a Vietnam vet, acts as a pallbearer for vets killed during the war. This experience, along with his time in Vietnam takes its toll on Michael in Pallbearers and Gamblers A Novel by Michael John Cruit. The year is 1971, the war is in full swing, and with few supporters, vets are largely not welcomed when they return home. Michael is called home to attend to his mother who is dying of cancer. This combined with his father's involvement with Al Capone, his father acting as Capone's financial advisor, makes for an interesting and complicated homecoming for Michael. Before he knows it, he becomes embroiled in a money making scheme that could make him millions. Fraught with emotion and struggle, this novel examines the deep implications and consequences that war has not only on veterans themselves, but the community as a whole. Drug use is part of the reality that grips many veterans in an effort to escape their tortuous lives; Cruit adding this aspect to Michael's character to more completely define him. Fully engaging, with an accurate portrayal of the price of war on families, this is a highly recommended book.
Set in the waning years of the Vietnam War, this gangster novel is quite the surprise. It opens with our protagonist, Michael, a member of an Honor Guard for military funerals in Vietnams – I didn’t expect the emotional intensity of this first act of the story. It sets up the rest of the novel very nicely – we understand the Michael is emotionally traumatized, for which he self-medicates with drugs.

But he leaves the military and goes home to Chicago. His home is much different from when he left for Vietnam. His relationships are frayed. He seems disconnected. And his mother is dying from cancer. Michael seeks to build relationships with his sister Claudia and his brother Sergio. Sergio drags his brother into the “family business,” digging himself deeper into a hole he’s not sure he can get out from.

Pallbearers and Gamblers is a story about family, healing, and finding oneself after being lost. The story has layers that are sure to please anyone interested in gangster stories, the Vietnam War, or even the dynamics family relationships. It’s a great story, wonderfully told by Cruit.
