SHADOW TEAM GB Starbirth series Book 3 eBook J M Johnson Reviews
Puts you in the action and won’t let you go! Lock Harford is my kind of hero and Johnson is my kind of writer. “SHADOW TEAM GB,” book 4 in the Starbirth series, by J Johnson continues what I call the “meticulous action” of the previous books. Meticulous, because the scenes, weaponry, etc. are well researched and described perfectly. We’re in the cold snow cave, we put on the black-hole suits, our automatic weapons are ready, and the SAS team is there. I love the thought-controlled weapons and how the author writes the action scenes. Some of them left me feeling as if I had survived, escaped, or won. I felt Lock’s frustration at the chimneys and could almost taste the heavy air in the tunnel complex. This is a vividly imagined series. Highly recommended. Five stars.
J.M Johnson brings together science fiction and military adventure in a future so close you can hear it coming on the nightly news. Shadow Team is the third book in the Starbirth series. I read this book as a stand-alone, and then went back to find the rest of the series. J.M. Johnson drops you into the middle of the action in this stellar adventure, and keeps you there, up close and personal with crises worthy of tomorrow's headlines. Our hero, a teleporter named Lock Harford, is a master of dark matter teleportation who combats villains with similar skills. Not Harford's mental powers, but his personality makes this future utterly believable. The government forms a team, with Harford leading, whose powers don't depend on the illegal drug called Starbirth. Immediately, the rookie team embarks upon its mission defend the realm. Johnson's storytelling is vivid as Harford's team fights drug-mad villains and betrayal at home, with their families at risk. Can Harford save a world where Starbirth addiction threatens civilization itself? Find out in Shadow Team GB; then, as I did, go find more books in this startlingly good series.
Shadow Team GB is the third book in the Starbirth series and each book can be read as a stand-alone. The set of characters in Harford, Jimmy, Dave and Postie combine in a tale of brotherhood and humour. They take the rules, break the rules and they become so four-dimensional that the reader will miss their cohesion when the book is finished.
I've read the previous books in JM Johnson's series and must say this was another quality novel that grabs you in the beginning and never lets go of you. Like all the others, Shadow Team GB opens full speed ahead, and the vivid imagery does not slow down.
Lock Harford continues as lead of these sagas, and brings many of his old characters and some new ones along on this mission.
The plots twist and turn in this tale that touches home due to today's headlines, and Johnson keeps the pace fast and furious while weaving together a story of science fiction imbued with military factors.
Get this, I'm not a huge fan of British Intelligence, but Johnson writes in such a way, we interpret why the characters behave in ways they do, and this makes you feel you know them. I cannot imagine being in the spy game as I'm too trusting of everyone. Not a luxury when people are fighting to save not only themselves but their family and their country.
Shadow Team GB gave me new appreciation of how Johnson sets each scene and made me feel I was standing alongside the crew and experiencing adventures with them. I cannot imaging anyone who enjoys action, intrigue, well researched facts on warfare and a touch of humor, not reading this novel in one setting. Unless you have to take a bit longer than usual to catch your breath between chapters.
Just finished book 4 and cant wait for the next one... Since I don't write reviews very often I'll try and keep it simple...
Great story line - read all four books back to back so was able to really grasp the characters development - only down side is the start of every new chapter would get a bit wordy in setting the scene - other than that its a great fast read...
Another great military sci-fi story from Jackie Johnson. I've been waiting to find out more about the story of Lock Harford and all of his friends (and enemies). The author did not disappoint. Once again, the book opens at breakneck speed and continues on from there. Several old enemies from Lock's earlier stories return ready to do him in and cause terror in Great Britain. Lock must run himself ragged trying to stop all the plots of separate but connected bad guys while also protecting his family and the UK. His old friends the Eagles show up to help, but so do some new friends with new skills. Even Lock picks up some awesome new skills.
This is a story with relevance to today's events in the world, situated only about five minutes into the future. Ms. Johnson writes a quickly paced story with lots of military action and sci-fi wonders. She blends both the military style and sci-fi together into a story that is plausible. She has definitely done her research into the background of SAS operatives and British Intelligence.
The book is not all action as Lock and his compatriots must examine themselves and their motives for doing what they must do to ensure their safety and that of their family and country. In the end, they must decide who to trust and what is the right thing to do.
Overall, a very good read. I could not put it down until the end and now want more.
