There is a certain stereotype about second books, and it is not a very good one. Second books are usually considered the kind of boring books that you sometimes struggle to get through. Despite having a bit of a shocker towards the beginning, Fate lived up to this stereotype for me.

I found myself upset at Alice throughout the book, I just wanted to tell her to stop whining already. She seemed very depressed and kind of needy throughout the story. I could understand where she was coming from, but jeez she needed to stop dwelling on it, and could have used her time to do something else instead of just moping around.

Once you get through most of the book, the story does start to pick up again at the end, and in doing so ends not so much on a nail-biting cliffhanger, but more of a "Oh my gosh, what does this mean?" and "What are they going to do about this?"

I just finished reading Fate and I found that I enjoyed it much better than the first book. Both books kept me hooked and I read them quickly, but I felt that this book had a more interesting plot. A lot of reviewers have complained of poor editing, but I didn't notice anything. Maybe it's been fixed up since then, or the book was just so interesting that I didn't notice the errors.

The love story between Jack/Alice is really interesting and I was kind of glad that there wasn't much Peter to get in between them. The author does an especially good job with the romantic scenes - they are really hot, but not in a smutty way. I don't know if my word choice is the best, but I can't think of any other way to describe it. D When Peter finally does make an appearance, it's a bit of a surprise (in a good way!). I loved the Peter/Jack fight scene!

I don't get the whole Lucian/Violet subplot. Why they were so obsessed with Alice? I got the vampire club scene, that made sense to me - most of the humans there are whorish and she is an innocent in a place she doesn't belong. What I didn't get is why they appeared at the gay club or why they appeared outside of the house party to follow Alice. Maybe I'm missing something here that gets explained in a later book, but I have a hard time understand why these two vampires can't leave her alone in a city of millions of other humans to feast on.

This book was much more realistic and flowed much better than the first. I'm glad to see Jack getting off the X-Box and taking an interest in the family business, since his lack of ambition was something I disliked in the first book. I wish Alice cared a little more about school, but it's not unrealistic for a teenager to not give a crap about high school or their future so I am willing to let that slide. ;)

My only real gripe with the entire story was that the "turning" of Alice was so abrupt. I didn't really see why she needed emergency vampirisation (my spell check going off over that word is bugging me so much). A high school kid turning into a vampire should be a big deal. There are more concerns than just her. Isn't anyone worried about her mom flipping out? Alice's grades weren't good enough to use the silly boarding school excuse. Doesn't she care about her mom? She was upset that Milo didn't give her mom much of a goodbye, but she's going to turn into a vampire without even saying goodbye herself? We all know Alice was going to turn, but I felt that it was too sudden and there wasn't good reason for the timing. This wasn't a life or death situation, this was Jack saying "I want you to turn!" and her saying "Ok!" and boom, she's a vampire.

Overall, great story. I can't wait to get started on the third book today. Definitely well worth the $3 I spent on kindle to get it and I highly recommend it to anyone interested in the genre.

Firstly noted, it has been years since I last read My Blood Approves! In fact, I don't even have a review of it up. It was during my first year of blogging, I believe, and things were off to a rocky start. Diving back into Amanda Hocking's world here was difficult. I couldn't remember much of anything, but luckily whatever important bits happened last time and impact this story were brought up in the beginning.

Fate was quite the read too! It starts off with an explosive start and not in any way you might be thinking. Milo, Alice's younger brother is injured and the only way to save him is for him to become a vampire. Alice makes the choice for him since he was near Death's door and soon her life changes entirely, considering it was her brother and not her, who made the transition to vampire. Jack made the change for Milo and needless to say it definitely puts a cramp into their relationship.

Although, calling what they have a relationship is another tricky matter. Since Alice learned she was meant for Peter, things between her and Jack are a bit strained. Jack keeps his distance mostly, but there are times he can be a charming boyfriend, but he stops before things get too physical. Now add in, Milo who is your basic baby vamp and needs caring and training constantly, there's not much room for romance in Jack's life and it affect Alice deeply.

Peter was absent for nearly the entire novel, he shows up at the end though. What I am struggling to remember is how Peter felt about Alice. Sure, her blood calls him to her and all that jazz that's mentioned, but since it's been years since I read the first book, I can't remember if it was a love triangle quality or not. It's definitely an odd love triangle though as both vampires are keeping their distance from Alice and Alice is left alone.

For most of the story, it was about Milo learning to be a vampire and Alice being left out because Milo was to "new" to vampirism and couldn't be trusted around her. And when she's finally allowed to be around him and they go out as group, she's attracted the attention of two other vampires who are "called" by her blood and for the remainder of the story, continue to be a thorn in her side. A dangerous thorn at that!

The book wasn't entirely a fast paced read, but it was still somewhat enjoyable. Not an overly loved one, but one that was definitely enjoyed. I guess the slow pace just led me to develop too many questions and then when the ending came I was left only mildly satisfied and again, having a few more questions. The main ones concern this love angle we got going on, as Alice is attracted to both vampires, but it seems Jack will be her choice...until Peter comes back into town.

My other complaint of course will be when I finish book 4, I will be left with more questions most likely as book 5 has nothing to provide other than a title. I have a feeling it was due to Amanda suddenly not being a self-published author anymore, I can only hope she will return to this series and finish it up to satisfy the reader within me!
